Why are shiitake mushrooms so expensive?

Shiitake mushrooms aren’t especially difficult to grow, though it does take time.

However, far fewer people, including commercial growers, grow shiitake mushrooms than those who grow more commonly sold mushrooms like button mushrooms.

This is actually the biggest part of the answer to the question.

Why are shittake mushrooms so expensive?

Shiitake demand is far greater than Shiitake supply, so the prices tend to be much higher than the prices of mushrooms like buttons (aka crimini, portabello, etc).

The supply isn’t likely to increase greatly, either.

Although they aren’t hard to grow, buttons are even easier to grow.

Shiitakes require wood for growth. Buttons grow in a medium that contains composted manure, and they don’t take as long to grow to harvestable size.

This is not only the reason that button mushrooms are far cheaper than shiitake mushrooms, but it is also the reason that button mushrooms are the most grown, sold, and eaten mushrooms in the world and shiitake mushrooms aren’t.

Alter moisture, temperature, light, carbon dioxide, etc.  Note : If the substrate is too moist, decrease moisture b) Chlorinated or contaminated water.  Solutions :  Use activated charcoal water filters to eliminate chemical contaminants or any other ways of simple or appropriate technology. c) Bad substrate.  Solutions : Check substrate. Spread the substrate and remix the substrate, package again, make sure all raw materials are good and fresh.   Note : It is necessary to pasteurize immediately after bagging otherwise fermentation gas will slow down the rate of growth of mycelium or stop mycelium growth. d) Bad pasteurization.  Solutions : Check method of pasteurization.
