How do I make sawdust spawn?
Mix about 1 pound coarse oak sawdust, about one-half pound of oak wood chips and about one-quarter pound each of millet and rice bran together in a 5-gallon bucket using your hands.
Add small amounts of water till you reach the desired consistency, with all the ingredients moist, but not sopping wet with water pooled in the bottom of the bucket.
The finished substrate will be completely moist and not stick together.
Transfer the mixture into a 2-pound heat-resistant plastic bag. Fold the tops of the bag over so the filter patch can allow gases to escape when heated.
Set your pressure cooker to 250 degrees Fahrenheit. Add the recommended amount of water for your cooker and insert the steamer basket.
Place the bag of substrate mix in the steamer basket so that it does not touch the water. Cook for 2 hours.
Put on cooking gloves. Relieve the pressure from the pressure cooker.
Remove the bag from the cooker and place it in a room that is free from microorganisms that could contaminate it.
Allow the block to cool to at least 86 F before inoculating it with spawn.
