Mushroom substrate preparation

The first step in substrate preparation is to cut it into small pieces of less than 5 cm. This will facilitate tight packing. If the substrate if too loose, mycelium colonisation takes very long because a lot of energy is required to cross the gaps.

If the substrate is too dense (too small pieces) it will have
insufficient aeration and cause the mycelium to struggle, while favouring anaerobic contaminants. Good substrate sizes ensure that there is vigorous growth of mycelium and adequate gas exchange.
