Jelly fungus identification  (Tremella cf. fuciformis)

The Tremellales is a small order of jelly-like fungi in a range of colors including white, yellow, orange-brown, and black.

One of the most common fungi in this group is Tremella mesenterica (Yellow Brain Fungus).

The jelly fungi are diverse and complicated, belonging to several groups within the phylum Basidiomycota.

Identification of species often hinges on microscopic examination, and things are further complicated by the fact that it is often difficult to transport a jelly fungus home in "examinable" condition, to say nothing of the difficulties encountered with trying to dry and preserve specimens.

Jelly fungi make rubbery, seaweed-like mushrooms.

Jelly fungi are a paraphyletic group of several heterobasidiomycete fungal orders from different classes of the subphylum Agaricomycotina.

The term "jelly fungi" is an informal one applied to species of fungi having a gelatin-like consistency.

Many kinds of jelly fungus appear on trees, but among the most common are jelly ear fungus and witches butter.
