Is a mushroom a plant?

Nope.

Like a gazillion years, ago (or thereabouts) plants split off from the branch that carried the ancestor of both Fungus and Animals.

That’s right, the fungus is closer to animals than to plants!

This is nifty because it turns out that fungus cells and our cells have many similarities.

For example, when some bacteria attacks fungus and the fungus comes up with a biochemical defense, often that same biochemical defense works for our cells! Voila, antibiotics.
