Commercial ‘button’ mushrooms (which is actually just a common mushroom picked when the fruiting body is immature) do not require complete darkness to grow.
They’ll thrive just as well in the light, but not direct sunlight.
However,
growing them in the dark does preserve moisture, which helps reproduction,
which is obviously an advantage for commercial growing.
